The summer always flies by too fast… And here we are, two weeks from September.
Time for Back-to-School Shopping… Again.
(Don’t know about you, but just hearing the words makes me wanna crawl into bed.)
Has it really been a year since we schlepped to all the stores, waited on endless lines, ordered and returned and ordered again until we had everything ready for the beginning of the school year (only to find, like, the day before school starts, that the shoes don’t fit properly with the new orthotics and the favorite must-take-everywhere comfort toy won’t fit into that cute little backpack)?
We can’t provide you with a free personal shopper (sorry), but we can give you a gift of a different sort:
Tips and top recommendations from fellow parents of children with special needs, who whether this season year after year and have some valuable two cents to share.
Enjoy!
- The Moskowitz family’s world turned upside down on the day that their teenage daughter, Shaindy, suffered a traumatic brain injury. It was a long journey forward, and though they were grateful for Shaindy’s slow but steady recovery, they felt she could benefit from various therapies which were not covered by their health insurance. Paying out of pocket was not doable, so the Mr. Moskowitz reached out to Ezreinu, and he was connected with several foundations which could help fund the life-changing therapies for Shaindy.
- Shabbos with energetic, behavioral Shalva bouncing around is always an exhausting day for her parents and siblings, so they have an arrangement with a local high school girl who gives them a short, much-needed break when she comes to play with Shalva each Shabbos afternoon. One Friday in the late afternoon, Shalva’s volunteer had to cancel. Her family understood, but the prospect of a long summer afternoon with no respite was daunting, and they called Ezreinu. Although it was already almost Shabbos, Ezreinu sent a volunteer to play with Shalva and her family enjoyed their restored menuchas Shabbos.
- Mrs. Ginzberg was an experienced mother who could enroll a child for preschool in her sleep, but when it came to her fifth child, a charming, talkative little boy with an ASD diagnosis, she had to start from scratch - and she was at a loss. Ezreinu guided her, recommending a few different programs based on her son’s needs and explaining the difference between each one. Mrs. Ginzberg was able to feel like an empowered mother once again as she enrolled her child in preschool.
